If anybody's looking for their pets, come to Bridge's Castle and Kennel! I've still got a few stray animals who are waiting for their lost friends to come and reclaim them! I'll be awake for a while, so don't worry about coming by.

Oh yeah, and Spike's here, too. But he's a little dead to the world right now. I've checked on him a few times just to see if he's still breathing, and he's A-OK. I wouldn't recommend trying to get him up for a day or two, though. ^_^

I'd be glad to have the company. ^_^

Naturally~

[Bridge is sitting cross-legged on the floor outside the entrance to his castle, waiting for Renae and writing in a non-magic notebook. Logan stands in the "doorway", contentedly releasing the occasional soft moo. Inside the fort, in a far corner, Spike is curled up in a ball, fast asleep, Tom beside him, simply laying awake with his human and clutching his stuffed hedgehog. A few cats amble and play here and there.]

Woo!

[Renae approaches, holding her ever-present sketchbook and her journal atop it. She smiles at Bridge, waving.]

Hello! What are you doing?

[Bridge returns the wave, shuts the notebook, and gets up, making an exaggerated bow that he hopes is elegant.]

None other than my very own Royal Artist! I am honored to have your presence.

[He then looks down at the notebook.]

Plotting things to do to Spike while he's asleep. [He then grins.] Nah, just kidding. Sometimes I like to keep a journal off the journals- somewhere where my innermost thoughts aren't broadcast all over the three, you know.

Greetings, Your Majesty!

[Renae bows back with a giggle and straightens. She nods at his idea.]

Yeah, I understand. It's nice to be connected to everyone, but there are some things best kept private. I have one of those, too....

[She glances past him and shakes her head.]

Poor Spike, he must be so tired after all that. I hope we won't need him before he wakes up on his own.

[Bridge goes a little red with pleasure at being addressed thusly.]

I know what you mean. And sometimes I just like to doodle or make plans for elaborate machines I'm never going to build, and I don't like wasting journal space on that kind of stuff.

[He then turns and looks in on Spike, frowning slightly and shaking his head.]

He hasn't slept for several days, from what I could get out of him before he went out. He was so loopy by the end of it he even started using smiley faces everywhere. He's always so dedicated to his duty... for him, resting on the job when there were still people to evacuate would be unthinkable.

[He feels a twinge of admiration for his best friend, even though a twinge of unreasonable guilt for not having that insane level of loyalty accompanies it.]

[Renae sighs, both admiring and incredulous...and maybe a little guilty, too. There wasn't much she could do to help against fire ants, after all. The best she could muster was to help move things and not give reason for the guards to waste resources on searching for her.]

Several days?? That's just nuts. I'm sure we needed the help, but...how on earth could he function like that?? Well, I'll guard him from being pestered while I'm here. It's the least I can do for someone who's been so helpful.

...what sort of machines do you draw? If you don't mind showing me, I'd like to see.

[Bridge scratches his head.]

I'm really not sure how he does it. He's just that devoted, I guess. Oh, good; I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

[He opens up the notebook, showing her a rough sketch of several different styles of robot dog.]

Well- sometimes I want to build Logan a friend. [Upon hearing his name, Logan jumps down next to Bridge, wagging his tail and mewing, and receives a pat on the head in return.] I know he's a robot, but to me, he's alive, too. He's a real dog, and I know he gets lonely whenever I'm not here. It's probably just a pipe dream, though- I found Logan in pieces and rebuilt him, I'm not sure I could build another robot animal out of spare parts and junk.

Logan's awesome.

[Renae smiles at Logan when he joins them and reaches out to pat him also. She leans over to look at the robot dog sketches again and nods reluctantly.]

That is completely different, true. Sometimes, you can get lucky in the Scavenger's Yard, but there's no guarantee of what you'll find. At least you have him, though! And it never hurts to dream, anyway. I'd like to have a companion too, but I can never make up my mind as to what I want. Maybe a chocobo, like Medium has....

He sure is! And it was a great feeling to put him together with my own two hands.

[Logan sniffs Renae and wags his tail harder in response to his touch.]

Yeah... and if I can't make him a friend, I can at least make cool things to put on him! Or, well, just stuff that's ridiculous and could never be made in a million years...

[He opens to another page to show a mecha-type robot with an enlarged version of Logan's head on top.]

It would look cool, but I am DEFINITELY not going to find all the necessary parts. Not now, maybe not even if I live to be 100!

Well, there's certainly no shortage of animals here. Mostly cats, admittedly, but Raise has a dog, and there're lots of chocobos, of course. You'll find something.

[Renae peers at the mecha-robot sketch and raises an eyebrow.]

It looks nifty, but yeah, I've never seen anything in the yard that looks even close to being a part of it. I like your sketches, though. I've never seen anything like these--that I remember.

Eh, I'll figure out something when the time's right. Maybe a chocobo...hey, d'you if Medium made it to the Wilderness? I didn't see her on the census. Actually, if there's anyone else on there that you've seen who's on the list, I should add them.

[Bridge nods slowly.]

Thanks. Yeah, you're not the only one who doesn't recognize everything that I do. It's really strange when you think about it... we're all here, we're all born here just the same as everyone else, but things we recognize can be so different.

No, I haven't heard from Medium yet- I hope she's safe, though. You might want to ask one of the Guards if they've seen her- or maybe try asking for her in your journal? I saw West's census, which is a really good idea, but I don't have anyone to add to it, sadly...

[Renae shrugged, not expecting miracles. If Bridge had been able to help, she knew he would have, and that was good enough for her.]

It's okay. I asked for her on my journal, but it was an edit so maybe it was overlooked. That's a good idea about the Guards, though! It's all been so crazy, but someone might have seen her pass through. I haven't heard about Chicken, either.

[She glanced down at the sketch again thoughtfully, then opened her own sketchbook, flipping to the last pages until she came to a half-completed map.]

Speaking of recognition...did you see the Wilderness before it turned into bed-land? It was some strange factory. I recognized it from somewhere, but bits and pieces, not the entire place. I'm not sure what it was for, but it gave me an eerie feeling. I'm glad it's gone.

I must have missed it, sorry. I've been busy taking care of pets, I've pretty much only been replying to people who reply to me. And yeah, I think if anyone's seen her, there's a good chance the Guards have.

[He smiles, then peers at the map.]

No, I didn't get a chance to come down while it looked like that. It seemed familiar to you, huh? Maybe it's a place you only heard about but never visited... it was like that for me when the Wilderness was Las Vegas while the zombies were invading- big city, lots of flashy and fancy hotels and restaurants and casinos- it's a famous tourist destination, but I'd never been there.

I could have just heard of it before, I'm not sure. No crystals ever gave me memory of the factory. And yeah, someone here told me about the Wilderness being Las Vegas for a while. It's too bad we can't have it again, now. I bet it was a lot more fun than endless beds and maybe some pillow fights.

[She flipped her sketchbook shut; the map would be finished later.]

Maybe we can go exploring together when this place changes again?

I wish Vegas was here, too- or that it was the candy factory, like it was when I first got here! I didn't know the Wilderness changed shape at the time, so I was pretty upset when it was gone.

[He grins eagerly.]

I'd like that! Hopefully it'll be something cool to explore...

[She beams.]

Good! And it should balance out, right? Boring but comfy surroundings and then something a lot less comfortable, but more exciting, like that cave filled with monsters that Cara told me about. I'm still sad I missed that--and that candy factory. But you have a cool castle and cat therapy, so that helps a lot.

True. And I'd rather have boring and comfy than ants... or zombies... or evil twins...
